After a long process of preparation, the Dutch, German and Danish shrimp sector was awarded the MSC certificate on 12 December 2017 during the Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels. Obtaining the certificate showed that brown shrimp is caught sustainably by more than 400 fishing vessels in a managed and controlled way with minimized impact on the ecosystem. It was the start of a process in which the shrimp fisheries of the three countries are working together to make shrimp fisheries even more sustainable. The trilateral management plan therefore describes what the participating vessels must adhere to and what measures must be taken to continue to retain the MSC certificate. The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark are working closely together on this and nature organizations are also constructively involved.
